Along with our Wild Horses Workshop, our Loon Photography Workshop is one of our most popular Workshops. These Workshops typically fill up fast and are always full come shooting time !
Common Loons are one of the iconic symbols of the North Country. Their beautiful markings and haunting vocalizations are a highlight of the Northern Woods experience. In addition to the Loon's natural beauty, add to that the potential for cute brown fuzzy Loon chicks riding on their parent's back, and there's the chance for photographic magic!
Our Loon Workshops are in select locations in Canada, on lakes where the popularity of fishing on these lakes has the loons are very acclimated to people and boats.
We photograph from boats and more often than not the loons are so tolerant that we often need to back the boat up because the loons have come too close for telephoto shooting. On a typical Workshop there should be great opportunities for loon portraits, nesting loons, loons with chicks, and possibly Loon take-offs and landings as well. Although Mother Nature is often difficult to predict, as you can see from our sample images the timeframe we've chosen for these Workshops has historically been a prime time for newborn loon chicks.
You'll have the luxury of shooting from your tripod on the very solid deck of a pontoon boat, as we float along with the loons and position ourselves for the best possible light. Depending on the situation, we also have the option of numerous kayaks, canoes and rowboats with electric motors for a more intimate encounter with the loons or other photographic subjects.
The vegetation surrounding the lakes provides some spectacular reflections in the water around the loons, with colors ranging from blue to green, to gold and a wild kaleidoscope of colors in between.
Depending on the Workshop location we can often expect to be able to photograph a variety of other bird species as well.
